Hearing aids have changed a lot across the 10 years I’ve been in the audiology profession.
Back when I was starting out, fitting hearing aids was a much more clunky, low-tech process than it is today. You’d have these long, easy-to-tangle wires that you’d plug into the hearing aid and a nearby computer, and perform adjustments that way.
Though wireless technology existed back then, it wasn’t nearly where it is today. Even the most advanced hearing aids usually needed some kind of bulky accessory to be able to work wirelessly.
But even more important than the obvious external differences were the digital processes going on inside the devices. Even back then, hearing aids worked quite well. But if you stacked up the most powerful devices from 2008 against those from 2019, there just wouldn’t be any competition at all.
The incredibly complex circuitry of modern hearing aids closely mimics the operations of the human auditory system. Allowing seamless integration into your day to day life on a scope we never could have imagined even a decade ago.
Patients are confused about the cost of hearing aids. “Aren’t they pretty much just amplifiers?” people will sometimes ask me. But they’re thinking of the hearing aids from a different age.
Those inelegant devices could sure make soft sounds loud enough for people with hearing loss to hear. But they’d also make naturally loud sounds completely overwhelming. It’s the same reason why audiologists used to recommend hearing loss sufferers use a single hearing aid instead of two.
Adding a second ultra-loud amplifier would drive you crazy!
When you use modern advanced technology fit by a professional hearing provider. There are all kinds of things happening behind the scenes. The devices are working hard all the time. Compressing certain sounds, filtering out frequencies, detecting and dampening background noise, clarifying speech.
There’s so much going on that it would take forever to list them all in detail. That’s why it’s so important to learn the ins and outs of the devices. Don’t worry, it isn’t difficult. And to work with a provider who understands the nuances of your situation and is dedicated to making them absolutely seamless in your day-to-day.
