Modern hearing aids do a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes. Between active sound compression, angling directional mics to optimize input, interpreting thousands of wireless signals, calibrating attack and release times, dynamic sound enhancement, noise reduction, and a million other technological concerns you probably don’t care about but that is nonetheless essential to providing you with an accurate signal, there’s a ton going on.

Yet new patients are always shocked to discover how “short” the battery life is on most of these devices. “Only five to seven days!” They say, “That’s IT?” It seems unimaginable that in the age of the iPhone and constant convenience, a device you need for your everyday needs new batteries almost every week.

Lucky for these patients who hate replacing batteries, however, rechargeable hearing aids are becoming more and more common and affordable. Nearly every major manufacturer now provides rechargeable versions of their flagship products, and while they come with a slightly higher cost, the benefits can be enormous. Lately, I’ve been fitting a lot of patients with the ReSound LiNX Quattro, and I’ve seen firsthand how powerful and transformative they can be.

Of course, the biggest advantage these rechargeable devices have over their older counterparts is the fact that they’re rechargeable. Instead of fiddling with a tiny battery compartment every week — a task impossible for some of my more elderly patients — all you need to do is put the devices on a handy charging stand every night, and you’re good to go.

Another added bonus is that since most rechargeable devices also happen to be newer, they’re much, much more powerful than older models. The processors in these devices are orders of magnitude more robust, which massively benefits their ability to reduce noise and magnify speech. What’s more, they work seamlessly with your smartphone, with an incredibly straightforward interface designed to enable tweaks on the fly. To top it off, they’re more water resistant, with a sealed form factor that keeps out debris and moisture.

If you’re still using devices from years past, or have avoided hearing aids completely thinking they’re just for old folks, then you don’t know what you’re missing.
