As many of my patients know, for the past two years, I’ve been steadily working toward my certification as a meditation teacher. It’s been a long journey, full of ups and downs as I’ve striven to cultivate the discipline and mindfulness necessary to make a meaningful difference in my life and the lives of those I serve. And as of Monday, I’m proud to say that, after hundreds of hours of sitting, learning, teaching, and careful practice, I’m officially licensed!
I’m thrilled to be able to continue to guide my patients, peers, and community to the enormous benefits that meditation can bring. I’ve already written about ways that the practice has transformed my own day-to-day, the ways in which it’s imbued my life with a sense of contentedness, gratitude, clarity and intention. It may sound cliché, but honestly, it’s been a life-changing process—I can’t wait to share it with the world at large.
That’s not to say that the practice has always been easy. For those of you who’ve never meditated before, it’s probably difficult to imagine just how challenging sitting mindfully for a few minutes each day can actually be. Your anxieties, insecurities, fears, doubts and desires have a tendency to float to the surface in the midst of all that silence, especially when you’re guiding others for the first few times. But with practice, you learn not to automatically identify with those nagging thoughts and be truly present, to a degree uncommon in the overwhelming bustle of our modern world.
I’m especially excited to share meditation with my patients who suffer from persistent tinnitus. Mindfulness meditation has long proven to be an effective tool in mitigating the debilitating effects of stress-related ringing in the ears. For a anxiety-inducing syndrome often thought to be fundamentally incurable, it’s difficult to overstate just how powerful meditation can be as an added layer of support.
Stay tuned as I develop a program to incorporate meditation into my audiology practice, and as I lay plans to facilitate 3-day meditation courses for anyone who’s interested!
In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you. Do you experience tinnitus? Does it cause you stress and anxiety in your day-to-day? Feel free to reply to this email. The more info the better—I’ll be thinking about your responses as I work out a way to weave meditation into a comprehensive tinnitus management program moving forward.
With this certification it feels like I’m starting a new chapter not only for my audiology practice, but my entire life. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
